Binmen trained to spot burglars

BIN

Binmen are being trained to be the “eyes and ears” of the police in an attempt to burglaries and anti-social behaviour.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary gave a workshop to 50 binmen on how to spot suspicious activity in the villages of Comberton and Swavesey.

Sergeant Paul Robinson said the initiative was inspired by local residents who listed burglary as the biggest problem for police to tackle.

But:

Mark Wallace, a spokesman for the TaxPayers’ Alliance, branded the idea a “farce” and said catching thieves should be the responsibility of police.

He said: “And we thought PCSOs were dumbed-down policing. There is no substitute for having proper police out on the beat catching criminals.

“What local residents want is for people to do the jobs assigned to them.

“So binmen should focus on collecting the bins as regularly as possible and the police should focus on policing.”

So what do you think?
